403,705. Gas-producer grates; ash-pits. WHITFIELD GAS PRODUCER PATENTS, Ltd., and WILLIAMS, J. N., 82, Victoria Street, London. May 28, 1932, No. 12210. [Class 51 (i).] In a gas producer having multiple restrictive control of the air supply as described in Specification 342,646, the air is fed to the grate surface through passages which at one end are relatively large to form the apertures at the grate surface and which at a point in their length away from the grate surface are relatively narrow and constricted. The grate comprises an assembly of conical ring members i<1>, i<2>, i3, i<4> and i<5> decreasing in diameter from the lowermost upwards and spaced apart by bosses q on their undersides. Between the bosses are tapered spaces r forming at the wider ends the grate surface apertures and at the narrower ends the restricted air inlets. Adjacent ring members are locked together by means of lugs s engaging in notches t in the ring below. The ratio of the restricted inlet to the grate aperture is not greater than 1 : 6 and may be 1 : 100. The grate proper is supported by a vertical cylindrical member i secured to the inner edge of a rotary water trough h supported on rollers h<2>. Below the grate is a stationary member having three annular channels, the outer channels l<1>, l<3> serving as water sealing troughs and the centre channel l<2> for collecting ash and for receiving the air supply from a fan m<1> and inlet m<2>. Above the grate is mounted a water-cooled scraper comprising arms o and a centre hub o<1>.
