Abstract
Small waste metal, such as turnings, chips, &c., is heated to about 300-800 DEG C. in a reducing atmosphere to expel volatile matter and to soften and anneal the metal without melting, sifted, passed to a magnetic separator, and briquetted. Oil vapours expelled may be condensed either in original or cracked form and may be used for heating the furnace. The reducing atmosphere may be carbon monoxide to which may be added chlorine or the vapour of a volatile halide such as boron trichloride.
