Abstract
A process for extracting zinc from ores and oxides thereof comprises mixing the oxide with at least sufficient carbon to reduce it, plunging the mixture beneath the surface of molten copper or low zinc brass heated to 1900 DEG -2200 DEG F. for at least 10 mins. to reduce the oxide to zinc which forms a brass containing up to 16% zinc. The brass may then be heated to 2150 DEG -3200 DEG F. (preferably under subatmospheric pressure) to vaporize the zinc which is then condensed.
