[Class 23.] A centrifuge for the treatment of granular or fibrous material, for example that obtained from animal raw materials by decomposition, has a removable perforated basket 1 mounted in and rotating with the drum 3. The capacity of the basket corresponds to the effective capacity of the drum, and the perforations in its wall are of such size that coarse particles are retained in the basket while granular and fibrous material passes through and spreads over the wall of the drum. A filter bag 5 may be included in the apparatus. The basket 1 is fixed in a ring 2 secured to the angle ring 31 of the drum by bolts 4 and wedges 6. The nozzle 11 of a steam pipe 10 directs a jet of steam against the peripheral portion of the drum base and so facilitates the centrifuging of the liquid contents by raising the temperature of the drum. The stop valve 12 may be connected with the driving mechanism so that it is opened and closed automatically when the machine starts and stops. The liquids and gases pass through the pipe 8 to the condenser 13 where the steam meets cooling liquid from the nozzle 14. The liquids fall to the separator 15 having an outer vessel 15<1> to which the heavy constituent passes, while the light liquid, fat for example, remains in the inner chamber. The light liquid may be drawn off by a pipe 16<1> which has a covering hood to prevent the entrance of cooling liquid, and an overflow pipe 16 is provided for the heavy liquid.
