[Class 100 (i).] Apparatus for stacking letters, signatures or the like received, for example, from a sorting device comprises a guideway 3, a stacker member adapted to charge the letters into a container 10, and stop means which when the container is removed, come into action automatically to retain the letters on the guideway. The stop-plate 6 is hinged at 5 and urged by a spring 7 into the position shown dotted where it prevents letters leaving the guideway 3. An oscillating stacker-member 9 pivoted to the container 10, engages a spring-controlled latch 8 on the stop-plate 6 and moves the plate to inoperative position as the member 9 moves into position to receive a letter or letters from the guideway 3. As the member 9 moves to stacking position, the plate 6 returns to its operative position. During the removal of the container 10, the plate 6 is in its raised position, and remains so until the container is replaced. The stacker-member 9 is operated against the action of springs 42, 43 by a roller 12 on a lever 19 connected by an arm 25 to a rod 27 reciprocated from a cam 28. The charged containers 10 may have adjustable pins which, when the containers are placed on appropriate conveyors, cause them to be directed to definite receiving stations.
