Abstract

Photographic tanned colloid images are obtained by the use of light-sensitive diazo compounds, including the diazo compounds of 4 - amino - 1 (N - methyl - 6 naphthalene - tetrahydride - 1.2.3.4) - aminobenzene, and 41 - amino - 21 - carboxy - 11 - N - phenyl - 4 - amino - 4<1> - hydroxy - 1 . 1<1> - diphenylmethane, the tetrazo compounds of 4.4<1>-diamino-1.1<1>-diphenylamine, 3.3<1>-diamino-4.4<1>-dihydroxy-5 . 5<1> - dicarboxy - 1 . 1<1> - diphenylmethane, 41 . 41<1> - diamino - 21 . 2<1> - disulpho - 11 . 11<1> - N - N<1> - diphenyl - 4 . 4<1> - diamino - 1 . 1<1> - diphenyl, and 41 - amino - 21 - carboxy - 11 . N - phenyl - 4 . 4<1> - diamino - 1 . 1<1> - diphenylmethane; and also products obtainable by the condensation of aldehydes with diazo compounds, e.g. formalin or paraldehyde with 4-diazo-1.1<1>-diphenylamine. 4 - amino - 1 (N - methyl - 6 - naphthalene - tetrahydride-1.2.3.4)-aminobenzene is prepared by causing 6 - w - chlormethyl - naphthalenetetrahydride-1.2.3.4. to react with aniline, coupling the product with diazotised sulphanilic acid, and splitting with alkaline hydrosulphite. 3 . 3<1> - diamino - 4 . 4<1> - dihydroxy - 5 . 5<1> dicarboxy - 1. 1<1> - diphenylmethane is prepared by dinitrating methylene-disalicylic acid and reducing the dinitro product. 41 - amino - 21 - carboxy - 11 . N - phenyl - 4 4<1> - diamino - 1 . 1<1> - diphenylmethane is obtained by condensing equal molecular proportions of 4 . 4<1> - diamino - diphenylmethane and 4 - nitro - 1-chloro-2-carboxybenzene and reducing the nitro group. Upon slightly heating the tetrazo p compound of this body, one diazo group is exchanged for an hydroxy group, giving the diazo compound of 41-amino-21-carboxyl-11.N-phenyl - 4 - amino - 4<1> - hydroxy - 1 . 1<1> - diphenylmethane. 41 . 41<1> - diamino - 21 . 21<1> - disulpho - 11 11. <1> N . N<1> - diphenyl - 4 . 4<1> - diamino - 1 . 1<1> diphenyl is obtained by causing 2 mols of 4-nitro-2-sulpho-1-chlorbenzene to act upon 1 mol of benzidine and treating the nitro product thus obtained with a reducing agent.
