Abstract
Monoalkyl ethers of protocatechuic aldehyde are prepared by treating pyrocatechol monoalkyl ethers with salts of glyoxylic acid in a basic medium and subjecting the product, preferably without isolating it, to mild oxidation, e.g. with a reducible heavy metal compound or an aromatic nitro compound. According to the example, a solution of glyoxylic acid, obtained by the electrolytic reduction of oxalic acid, is neutralized with caustic soda and allowed to stand for some days with a solution of guaiacol in the equivalent amount of caustic soda; after removal of excess guaiacol by steam distillation, copper sulphate and more caustic soda are added and the mixture heated together; by extraction of the filtered solution with benzene, vanillin is obtained.
