Abstract

398,463. Securing retaining-rings on shafts. BRITISH TIMKEN, Ltd., Cheston Road, Aston, Birmingham.-(Timken Roller Bearing Co. ; Denber Avenue, Canton, Ohio, U.S.A.) May 29, 1933, No. 15430. [Class 80 (ii).] Means for securing to a shaft 1 a retaining- ring 4, for holding a roller-bearing race-ring 2 or other member on the shaft, comprises a transverse flat tapered key 6 engaging a transverse groove 5 in the shaft and registering notches 7 in an end-face of the ring 4. As shown, two keys engage the notches 7 at each of their ends. Either the shaft-groove 5 or the bottoms of the notches 7, or both, are at an oblique angle to the shaft-axis so that the keys 6 force the rings 4, 2 axially against a shoulder 3 on the shaft. The keys 6 are retained by setscrews 8.
