Abstract
398,456. Bearings. TIMKEN ROLLER BEARING CO., Denber Avenue, Canton, Ohio, U.S.A. April 28, 1933, No. 12370. Convention date, June 16, 1932. [Classes 12 (i) and 12 (ii).] The coupling-rods 25, 29 of a locomotive are journalled on the outer bearing member C of antifriction bearings mounted on each crank pin 9 or 10 of the driving axles. The bearings on the pin 9, Fig. 3, comprises rollers 20, 23 running on inner races 21, 24 spaced apart by a sleeve 40 and shims 42, and retained on the pin by a ring 43, adjusting shims 44 being provided. The outer bearing member C is coned at 53 to fit a ring 54 secured by screws 55 to a closure ring 51 which is thus held to the member C. The inner periphery of the ring 51 fits snugly over a split sealing ring 50 seated in a groove in the bearing race 24. A similar closure ring 62 bears against a sealing ring 50 on the bearing race 21 and is secured by screws 61 to a two-part ring 60 seated in a groove in the member C. The rods 25, 29 are journalled on the member C by means of plain bearing liners 17 and are prevented from lateral movement by the rings 54, 62. The roller cages comprise rings 45, 46 connected by tie members 47. The rings may be provided with wear liners 48 to reduce friction between the cage and the bearing member C and races 21, 24. The hollow bore of the pin 9 is closed by a cap 63 having an oil-feed fitting 64. Radial oilways 65 in the pin lead to annular oilways 66 and radial bores 67 in the race 21 which communicate through radial bores 68 in the inner flanges of the cage rings 46 with the space between the bearings. The bearing liners 17 of the driving rods are lubricated by means of oilways 70, 71, 74, 77 communicating with the central space by means of bores 69, 73 in the outer flanges of the cage rings 46 and a bore 75 in the ring 62. The roller bearing on the crank pin 10, Fig. 2, is provided with a closure ring 51 similar to that on the pin 9 ; an outer closure ring 85 is secured by screws 84 to a split ring 83 seated in a groove in the bearing member C, the driving rod 25 being prevented from lateral movement by these rings. The hollow bore of the pin 10 is closed by a plate 87 secured to the pin by screws 86 and provided with a coned portion 89 fitting against a corresponding surface on the roller race 27 and thereby securing the latter on the pin. The innermost race 27 abuts against a coned surface 79 on the pin.
