Abstract

397,887. Electric lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Strickland, R. F.; 2227, Noble Road, Cleveland Heights, Ohio, U.S.A.) Feb. 24, 1932, No. 5558. Convention date, Feb. 25, 1931. [Class 39 (i).] In lamps such as those described in Specification 317,832, [Class 39 (i), Electric lamps, Arc, &c.], in which a sealed bulb 10 filled with inert gas or vapour contains current leads 11, 12, arc electrodes 19, 20 and a filament 18 across the leads 11, 12 so that, at starting, the filament glows first and the arc then strikes, the electrodes 19, 20 are formed as coils and parts of the filament 18 adjacent its ends are disposed within these coils, the difference between the starting and operating voltages being thus reduced. The coils 19, 20 may be of tungsten and the leads 11, 12 of nickel with tungsten parts sealed into the stem 13. The filament 18 is a tungsten coil extending towards a pool 21 of vaporizable metal such as mercury, and the bulb 10 is of borosilicate glass transmitting ultra - violet rays. In a modification, the filament is curved upwardly away from the pool 21 and is supported at its centre by an anchor from the stem 13. The lamp may be supplied by a transformer with a drooping characteristic.
