[Class 100 (i).] Sheet-separators.-In a sheet-feeding apparatus separation of the top sheet of the pile 26 is effected by the combined action of a combing device 21, a sheet separator element such as a suction nozzle 55 which engages the top sheet after it has been combed by the comber 21, and a sheet-holding device 37 which holds the combed sheets in a buckled condition while the nozzle 55 engages the sheet. Other sheetholding devices 45, 66 are used to assist the buckling of the sheets as they are combed, and a holder 28 also holds the remainder of the pile, as shown in Fig. 6, to permit withdrawal of the top sheet without disturbing the remainder of the pile. Air is blown under the top sheet as it is withdrawn either from the holder 28, or bv means of other air nozzles. The combing roller 21 is mounted in a lever arm which is oscillated by a cam on a shaft 10 driven from a motor 18 by worm gearing. Other cams on the shaft 10 raise the holder 28 and permit the holder 37 to come into action at the correct time, and further cams acting through connecting-rods and lever arms raise the sheetholding device 66 when the nozzle 55 is raised to the position shown in Fig. 6, and finally raise the holder 45 as the sheet is being drawn off by forwarding devices. The separating devices are duplicated on the other side of the machine when wide sheets are being operated on, and the cams and the separating devices are mounted in a frame 75 which can be laterally adjusted.
