[Also in Group XVII] Sheet separators.-In a machine for making flat bags or envelopes, (see Group XVII), of the kind in which each blank is withdrawn from the bottom of a feed pile and then folded on itself to form the flat opposite faces of the bag or envelope, the intake mechanism that draws each blank into the machine passes it directly to one or more printing mechanisms prior to the folding operation, so that the printed face becomes the external surface of the finished bag or envelope. A pile of blanks 2, Fig. 1, is supported on a feed table 1, each with the edge 4 of the flap S, Fig, 3, positioned at the leading edge so that a sheet rake 5 with teeth 6 engages the edges 4 of the upper blanks of the pile. A suction nozzle 7 carried on a hollow rocking-shaft 8 seizes the leading portion of the lowermost blank and bends it over the downturned edge 1<SP>1</SP> of the table, whereupon it is engaged by a nose 10' on each of a pair of slotted feed cylinders 10 which are spaced coaxially apart on a common hollow shaft 9 and rotated continuously anti-clockwise. The suction nozzle 7 operates within the space between the adjacent ends of the cylinders 10. The withdrawal of the lowermost blank is assisted by a pair of pile supports 17 which swing synchronously below the lower end of the pile and lift it as soon as the edge 4 of the lowermost blank has been bent down by the suction nozzle 7. Suction conduits 18 are provided within the cylinders 10 adjacent to the noses 10' which engage the edge 4 of a blank, and the blank is carried by the cylinders 10, assisted by drawing-in rollers 11, to an adjacent printing cylinder 19, provided with a suction conduit 20 and orifices 21. To enable the machine to make different sizes of bags and envelopes, (see Fig. 3), the sheet rake 5, suction nozzle 7, intake cylinders 10, drawing-in rollers 11 and pivoting feed-pile supports are mounted between auxiliary links 65, Fig. 2, which can be adjusted laterally relative to the main links by rotation of a screw 70 mounted on one of the main links or side plates 67 and held against longitudinal motion, but in screw-threaded engagement with one end of an arm 73 mounted rigidly on one of the auxiliary links 65.
