[Class 39 (ii).] In portable electric battery lamps of the kind comprising a handle which completes the circuit on the lamp being raised thereby, a catch provided between the handle and the lamp body is operable by a movement of the handle to hold the latter in the circuitclosing position. In one form the handle 9, Fig. 1, made of resilient strip metal, is secured at its upper end to the body of the bulb support by a bolt 8 connected to the centre contact of the bulb, the lower end of the handle being formed with a hook 10 which bears against the head of a screw 12 when the lamp is lifted by the handle, thereby completing the circuit through a plate 11 in contact with one of the contact strips of the battery. To maintain the circuit closed the handle 9 is depressed so that the hook 10 engages under the head of the screw. In another form, Fig. 2, the handle 9 is secured to the bottom of the lamp, the upper end of the handle being slotted at 14 to engage a screw 15 and provided near its end with a rib 16 which is normally in staggered relationship to, and out of contact with, a rib 17 near the end of a metal strip 7 extending through a slot 13 in the insulating body of the lamp. A helical spring 18 around the screw 15 tends to hold the free upper part of the handle in its lowermost position. When the lamp is lifted by the handle the spring 18 is compressed and contact is made. To maintain the contact when the lamp is placed on a support the handle is pushed towards the lamp until the rib 16 engages behind, and in contact with, the rib 17. The movement of the handle may be provided for by hinging it to the container.
