Abstract

Fillers for use with rubber to form plastic compositions and fibres for mattresses are obtained from the seed cores or centres of kapok and like pods of the family Bombace , such as the Mexican pochote and the balsa tree. The cores are first disintegrated to form "ground centres." This may be used as a filler or may be further separated to obtain the fibres and the powdered meal. The finer filler thus obtained may be substituted for cork as a filling material, e.g. may be mixed with rubber latex to obtain a tough elastic sheet like soft linoleum.
