A bedstead for hospital use comprises a bed surface frame tiltable in relation to the bedstead frame about either of two axes at right-angles, the tilting being effected in each case through the same lifting and lowering gear which is adjustable according as tilting about one or the other axis is required. The bed surface frame c is provided near the foot end with lateral trunnions c<2>, c<3>, the former being carried by a sleeve c<4> rotatably mounted on one side bar a<3> of the bedstead frame and the latter normally resting on a lug a<4> on the other side bar a<3>. The frame c near its front end is provided at one side with a bearing pin c<5> resting on a lug c<6> on one side bar a<3> of the bedstead frame and at the other side with a U-shaped bearer bracket c<7> normally resting on the other side bar a<3>. Lifting and lowering are effected through a manually rotatable shaft d<2> mounted in brackets d depending from the side bars a<3> and provided with right and left hand threads fitted with screw boxes d3, d<4>. To the box d <4> is pivoted at e<3> a stirrup f rigid with a link e pivoted to one side of the frame c, and to the box d<3> is pivoted at e<4> a similar stirrup f formed with a U-shaped upper end pivoted at f<3> to a link e<2> pivoted to the other side of the frame c. When the frame c is to be tilted about the trunnions c<2>, c<3> the joint at the pivot f<3> is made rigid by inserting a pin g through holes in the walls of the U-shaped end of the stirrup, whereas, when the frame c is to be tilted about the side bar a<3> with the sleeve c<4> and the bracket c<7> as bearings, the pin g is removed and is preferably inserted in holes h in the bracket c<7>. In a modification the operating screws are on parallel shafts geared together through spur wheels adapted to be disengaged by sliding one wheel on its shaft and the link e<2>, like the link e, is rigid with its stirrup f. In this case tilting about the trunnions c<2>, c<3> is effected with the wheels in mesh and tilting about the side bar a<3> is effected with the wheels disengaged, the necessary movement of the link e<2> being permitted by providing slots l, Fig. 8, in the stirrup f for the pivot at e<4>. According to the Provisional Specification the links may be arranged to telescope.
