LAND-ROLLER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMMI H. SMITHSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Prospect, in the county of Marion and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in LandRollers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the subject of land rollers, and particularly to that type, employing two rollers which are capable of being adjusted at various angles.
To this end the present invention contemplates a simple, durable, and inexpensive land roller that will be of practical utility for compacting and leveling ground in farming or operations where it is desired to level or roll the ground.
One object of the invention is to provide a construction that will permit the device to be easily handled by the operator, and also reduce the pull of the draft team by the improved adjustment afforded the rollers.
Another object is to provide adjustable rollers within a single stationary frame, each having its own bearings mounted therein so that each roller may be separately and independently adjusted.
lVith these and many other objects in view which will more readily appear as the description of the case proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
A preferred and practical embodiment of the present construction is shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved land roller. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof with the rollers arranged in horizontal alinement. Fig. 3 is a similar view, but showing the rollers in one of the positions to which they are capable of being shifted. Fig. a is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 4% of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view on the line 66 of Fig. 4.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the framework includes opposite frame sections 1, having a hinged connection at 1 with a draft tongue 3, said framework also including the braces 2 at the ends of the frame sections, and braces 4 secured to the frame sections and hinged at 5 to the tongue. and fall to adapt them to inequalities of the ground. There is also suitably located on the draft tongue 3 a seat 6 for the operator of the machine.
The rollers 7 are carried upon axles 8, which are mounted in suitable bearings, and are independently controlled by separate levers. The outer end of the axle 8 of each roller 7 is journaled in a bearing 8* in a pivotally-hung supporting bracket member 9 provided with enlarged head portions 10, that are adapted to move in bearing sockets 11 secured to opposite frame bars. (See Figs. 2 and 5.) Each supporting bracket member 9 is also connected to the frame by the vertical pivoting bolts 12 secured to the said supporting bracket members at their lower ends, and pivotally connected to the braces 2 at each end of the frame 1. These bolts 12 serve as vertical axes for the bracket members 9, and permit the said brackets to turn laterally in the frame.
A portion of the inner end of each of the axles 8 is journaled in the bearing 8 of an inner bearing and supporting bracket 2, provided at its upper end with arms carrying the friction reducing rolls 13 which are adapted to ride in the guideways 14: of the arcuate stationary guide members 15 secured to the central part of the machine frame and disposed transversely thereof.
The extreme inner ends of the axles 8 are suitably attached to the arms 16, which are also connected with the operating levers 17. The said operating levers 17 may be of any of the well known constructions, but preferably of the type that employs a spring pressed locking dog 17 a that is adapted to engage a toothed segment 17" to hold the rollers at any desired angle with respect to the frame and to each other. In order to aid the operator to bring the rollers into axial alinement there are provided springs 18 which are at tached to each side of the supporting bracket members 9 as at 19, and to the frame members 1 as at 20.
From the foregoing description it will be observed that, when the operator desires to shift the two rollers 8 out of axial alinement, for instance as shown in Fig. 3, or' in other positions, he merely manipulates the lever or levers 17 toward, or from him, as the case may be, to secure the desired adjustments. In this operation the inner bearing and supporting brackets 9 are caused to slide along in their respective guide members, while the outer supporting bracket members .9, in which are journaled the outer ends of the axles 8, are caused to turn on the vertical bolts 12 and in the sockets 11 on the frame bars. This construction makes the shifting of the rollers independent, as will be easily and readily accomplished.
It is thought that from the foregoing the many advantages of the invention will be readily apparent and that minor changes and details of construction may be departed from Without sacrificing the spirit of the invention or departing from the scope-of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A land roller comprising a frame having sockets thereon, end braces covering said sockets, supporting bracket members at the outer ends of the frame and having enlarged head portions adapted to bear in said sock ets, vertical boltspivotally connecting said supporting brackets and said end braces, inner shiftable bearing and supporting brackets, rollers journaled in said brackets, and levers for shifting the rollers independently of each other.
2. A land roller comprising a frame hav ing opposite frame bars, pendent support ing bracket members pivotally hung at the outer ends of. said frame on vertical axes and provided with terminal head portions having a bearing engagement over said opposite frame bars, inner pendent shiftable bearing and supporting brackets having a sliding engagement at their upper ends with the ends of the frame, rollers journaled in said brackets, and levers for independently adjusting said rollers.
3. A land roller comprising a frame, outer pivotal supporting bracket members, inner shiftable bearing and sul'iporting brackets, rollers journaled in said brackets, means for adjusting said rollers, and centering springs connected with the said outer supporting brackets and With the frame.
