WILEY JULIUS DUNHAM, OF BEREA, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE DUNK- AM COMPANY, OF IBEREA, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
LAND .ROLLER 0R PULVERIZER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 30, 1913.
Application filed September14, .1911. Serial N 0. 649,338.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KVILEY JULIUS DUN- HAM, a resident of Berea, in the county of Cuyalioga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Land Rollers or Pulverizers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming, part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a front view partially in section of one form of my improved roller. Fig. 2 is a section on the line II-II of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of the end of the main frame, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of one of the oscillating journals for the shaft of one of the rollers.
This invention relates to land rollers or pulverizers and is designed to provide a simple and efficient device of this character, in which one roller can assume a different angle from the angle of the other roller, so that the entire surface of the ground to be rolled will be engaged by the rollers irrespective of the irregularities of the surface thereof.
The precise nature of my invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, which will now be described, it being premised, however, that various changes may be made in the details of construction and general arrangement of connections between the rollers and the main frame, without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, as defined in the appended claims.
In the drawings the numeral 2 designates the main frame, and 3 the roller supporting hangers at the ends thereof. Each of these brackets comprises a main member having downwardly extending lugs 4. Connected to each lug by means of a strap 6 is a bracket 5, the straps being connected to the lugs and brackets by means of bolts or rivets. Each bracket is provided with an inwardly extending projection which projections are secured to each other at the central portion of the hanger, and said brackets are also provided with downwardly extending projections 7, having transverse openings therethrough.
Pivotally mounted in the transverse openings in the projections of each hanger are trunnions 8 extending laterally from a shaft supporting member 9, having a longitudinally extending opening therethrough, the center of said opening being in the same plane as the centers of the trunnions 8. 10, 10 are roller or pulverizer shafts mounted in each of said supporting members 9 each of which extends beyond the ends of its respective supporting member. Mounted 011 these shafts 10, 10 and on each side of the respective supporting members, are the rollers or pulverizers 11, 11 and l2, 12 respectively. Loosely connected on the inner end of each of the shafts 10 is a link 13, the other ends of said links being loosely connected to a draft member let extending downwardly from the tongue 15. These links are arranged to relieve the strain from the brackets 3, and as there is sufficient freedom of motion in the various pivotal connections, they will permit the shafts and their rollers to oscillate.
16, 16 are collars on the outer ends of the shafts, which are retained in position by the cotter pins 17, for retaining the rollers on the outer ends of the shafts.
The advantages of my invention result from the provision of a land roller or pulverizer having a plurality of shafts supported intermediate of their ends, the su ports for said shafts being pivoted at their ends to hangers connected to the frame of the roller or pulverizer, said pivots for the supports being on a line with the center of the shafts. Further, from the provision of links which are loosely connected to the inner ends of the shafts and the frame or a member connected thereto, and which links are arranged to steady the shafts and relieve the hangers from some of the strain.
I claim:
1. A land roller having a rigid frame, a tongue fixedly connected to the frame, a two armed axle supporting bracket at each end of the frame, each of said arms having an annular bearing, means for connecting both arms of each bracket to the frame, a shaft support having trunnions journaled in the annular bearings in the arms, a roller shaft mounted in each of said supports, a plurality of rollers rotatably mounted on each shaft, said rollers being located on opposite sides of the shaft supports, and means on the ends of the shafts for retaining the rollers on the shafts; substantially as described.
2. A land roller having a built up rectangular frame, a tongue'fiXedly connected to the frame, a two armed axle supporting bracket rigidly connected to each end of the frame, a shaft support j ournaled in the arms of each of said brackets, a roller shaft mounted in each of said supports, a plurality of rollers mounted on each shaft, said rollers being located on opposite sides of the shaft supports, a draft member fixedly connected to the tongue and extending downwardly therefrom, and links pivotally connected to the inner ends of the shafts and the draft member; substantially as described.
3. A land roller frame having downwardly extending grooved lugs at each end thereof, a sectional bearing comprising upwardly extending lugs at each end of the main frame, said lugs having grooves in line with the grooves in the lugs on the frame, means for connecting the sectional members of each bearing to each other, straps within the grooves in the lugs in alinement with each other, and means for securing the straps to the lugs to rigidly connect the hearings to the frame, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
