LAND=ROLLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 377,066, dated January 31, 1888.
Application filed June 11, 1887. Serial No. 240,970. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE C. Foosn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dalton, in the county of Livingston and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Land-Rollers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon,which form apart of this specification.
The main object of this invention is to have two rollers so arranged as to immediately follow each other or to swing` over the first so as to run in line beyond the second one, overlapping a little to make a continuous leveling; also,injointing the beam behind the first roller, so as to allow an up-and-down movement and a slight side play to the rollers, the continuation of the beam back of thejoint making a journal for the second roller, and the invention as constructed will be understood by reference to the following specification and claims.

The inner end of the journal b is forked and provided with an eye, b', in each end,which receives the beam C. (See Fig. l.) This allows an up-anddown movement or swinging entirely over of the roller A; but nuts or burrs (Z d are set on thebeam each side the fork to keep theposition of the journal on the beam, whether swung in front of roller B or at one side, as shown in Fig. l, dotted lines indicating the roller when swung over.
Just back of roller A the beam C is jointed at e by a coupling, as shown, or by any other suitable hinging device, and is then bent at nearly right angles a little way, then bent back in line with the front part, and then bent inward at right angles atf, so as to form the jonrnal O of the roller B, as shown in both igures. Bending the beam at i allows the second roller in running to overlap the end of the first roller, and thus ,give a continuous leveling over a broader space. The joint eis also important, as it allows the rollers to turn easily and sharply in corners and avoid bad places and also get a little lateral swing.
The body o'f the rollers is made of wooden staves bound around with iron hoops, hollow, except in the center, where the hub is placed, giving therein the bearing for the axle suitably held in place. The hereindeseribed land-roller, comprising the rollers A and B, the roller A on a journal, O,whose inner end sets loosely on the beam C, and held in place by nuts or stops d d, arranged as described, and so as to ,swing over in front of the second roller, B,when desired, substantially as specified.
2. In aland-roller, the beam C, jointed at e, and bent atf,as described, formingthejournal C', for the second roller, B, and in combination with rollers A B, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
