Description
H. B. GURLER. Garbage -Trn0k.
Patented April 30, 1878.
No. 203,l44.
ATTORNEYS- NJETERS. lNOTOJJTRDGRAPNERI WASHINGTON. D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
HENRY.B. GURLEB, OF DE KALB, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN GARBAGE-TRUCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 203,144, dated April 30, 1878; application filed March 23, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY B. GURLER, of De Kalb, in the county of De Kalb and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Swill-Carriers; and 'I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon. I
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a side view of my Swill-carrier, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a swill-carrier, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
' The annexed drawing, to which reference is made, fully illustrates my invention.
A represents a square frame of suitable size. In the center, on two opposite sides of this frame, are secured two plates or castings, B B, from each of which projects a spindle, a, to receive the driving-wheels G O.
D represents the barrel, arranged in the center of the frame and provided with journals or trunnions b b, which are placed in bearings d d on the front and rear bars of the frame, so that the axis of the barrel will be at right angles with the axis of the frame. The
barrel is thus allowed to swing from side to side, which prevents the contents from slopping over on rough ground and causing the barrel to retain its balance on any ground.
F represents a handle or bail, the ends of which are placed on the spindles a a outside of the wheels 0- O, which gives more control over the load when moving the same by hand.
When it'is desired to use horse-power for moving the carrier, thills G are placed on the spindles a a between the driving-wheels and the frame A, so that the draft will be directly upon the spindles, leaving, in all cases, the frame A free to vibrate.
In some cases I may remove the draft from the axle and apply to the frame, by having two pins, as w, on each plate B, one in front and the other in rear of the axle, said pins projecting through segmental slots in an iron, h, attached to the rear end of the thill. In this case the draft is then upon the pins at the sides of the frame; but said frame is in this case also permitted to vibrate freely on its axis by means of the slots in the irons h.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the frame A with spindles a a, having driving-wheels G 0 thereon, and the barrel D, hung upon journals in the frame at right angles to the axis of said frame, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination with the barrel -frame and wheels, as described, the handle or bail F, connected to the wheel-spindles outside of the wheels, for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
HENRY B. GURLER. Witnesses:
I. V. RANDALL, GEORGE H. GURLER.
