448,114. Endless-track vehicles. RANSOMES & RAPIER, Ltd., Waterside Iron Works, CAMERON, C. M., 12, Norbury Road, and HEATH, A. T., 68, Nacton Road, all in Ipswich. Nov. 30, 1934, No. 34413. [Classes 79 (i) and 79 (v)] An endless-track vehicle or excavator comprises four endless tracks, means for driving through differential gearing the front pair and the rear pair of tracks, and poweroperated steering mechanism arranged to swivel both pairs of tracks through linkage so as to produce the Ackermann steering effect on each pair. In the construction shown, the main vehicle frame A is supported on four tracks B by means of hydraulic cylinders C having plungers C<1> which may serve as steering pivots for the tracks and are provided with forks B<1> on which the track frames are pivoted at B<2>. Liquid may be forced into any of the cylinders C to adjust the loading, and two of the cylinders may be put into communication so as to equalize the load on the two corresponding tracks and to give the effect of a three-point support for the vehicle. The motor (not shown), is mounted on the frame A and drives the tracks through a vertical shaft D, bevel gearing D<1>, E<1>, oppositelyrotating shafts E, differential gears F, and telescopic universally - jointed shafts G. The track forks B<1> are formed with steering arms B<3> connected by links H<2> to bell-cranks H pivoted. at H<1> on the frame, the parts being arranged as shown to swivel the inner track on a curve more than the outer track. The bell-cranks H are connected by links L to nuts K engaging right- and left-handed screw threads formed on a shaft J which can be rotated in either direction from the oppositelyrotating shafts E by means of spur gearing E2, M controlled by a double clutch J<1> splined on the shaft J. Each track unit may comprise two tracks pivoting independently about a horizontal transverse axis, and together about a horizontal longitudinal axis.
