[Class 145 (i).] In a wood-working machine for cutting rectangular holes by means of chisels and a rotary cutter having an oscillatory or transverse reciprocatory motion to and fro between the chisels, the cutter and chisels are mounted on a common support; the support and the work are moved relatively to one another to effect the cut in a single operation. A drill 9, Figs. 1 and 2, is mounted in bearings in a fork 5 pivotally mounted on the frame 2 ; the drill is driven from a motor 13 by a belt passing over a pulley 10 having a concave surface. The fork 5 is connected to an eccentric 20, Fig. 3, which can be adjusted by a screw 23, the eccentric being rotated by the motor 13 through bevel gearing so as to oscillate the cutter 9 which cuts a hole as shown in Fig. 5. Chisels 50 are mounted on slides 46 which are horizontally adjustable by a screw 47 having right and left handed thread portions; the chisels complete the ends of the cut, as in Fig. 6. The work 60 is clamped on a slide 38 on the work table 36, the slide having a rack 39 engaging a pinion 40 on a shaft 34 which is intermittently rotated by a pawl and ratchet 32, 33 actuated by an eccentric disc on the drive shaft 21, so as to feed the work step by step to the cutters. Alternatively the work may be stationary and the cutters fed into it. In this case, the cutter 9 is preferably translated laterally between the chisels 50 in known manner.
