395,449. Variable-speed gearing. JOLLY, R. W., 10, South Park Road, Wimbledon, London, and BRITISH ELECTRIC METERS, Ltd., Morden Road, Mitcham, Surrey. March 8, 1932, No. 6916. [Class 80 (ii).] A change-speed gear comprises two or more gear transmissions 17, 18, 19, with their parallel axes in a plane on a movable carriage 7, rectilinear movement of which in the plane of the gear-axes engages the transmissions between gear wheels 4, 5 or 6 on the driving shaft 2 and a driven gear wheel 3, individual gears 22, 24 being displaced axially for clearance, while at least one of the transmissions is disposed on the line of centres of the shaft 2 and gear wheel 3 when in operative position. The carriage 7 may be slid on fixed pins 12, 13 by a rack 14 and pinion 15.
