Abstract

1,205,821. Change-speed gears. UNITED GAS INDUSTRIES Ltd. 9 July, 1969 [26 July, 1968], No. 35897/68. Heading F2D. A two-speed toothed gear drive with no neutral position, for a variable tariff, e.g. pricing mechanism of an electricity or gas meter, comprises an integral pair of toothed wheels 5, 6 rotatably fast with but axially slidable on a hexagonal output shaft 2 into mesh with one or other of two gears 3, 4 integrally formed on an input shaft 1, the overall width of the slidable output gear pair 5, 6 being greater than the spacing between the input pinions 3, 4 whereby during ratio shift, i.e. axial sliding of the gear pair 5, 6 the gearing is locked, the new ratio being established before disengaging the existing ratio to avoid a neutral condition in which power (i.e. gas or electricity) could be consumed without the associated credit being recorded on the meter. Change of ratio is effected by manually turning in one or other direction, via a screw-driven slot 25, a helically splined shaft 18 to axially move a striker arm 12 correspondingly splined thereon and prevented from rotation by an axially extending fixed pin 19 piloted in the arm 12 at 20, the arm 12 having a forked end 15 carrying axial pins 13, 14 engaging with slight clearance each side of a disc 7 fast with the integral gear pair 5, 6 for axial gearchanging movement thereof, the pins 13, 14 being formed of or coated with a low friction material. The screw-driven slot 25 is formed at the end of shaft 18 in the face of a separate pinion 21 which meshes a quadrant marked with the relevant meter rates A or B one or other of which appears in an indication window 24 only when the appropriate gear pair 3, 5 or 4, 6 are fully meshed and the other pair completely disengaged, which condition allows a spring- loaded plunger (not shown) to engage one of two holes in a disc (not shown) ensuring correct complete movement of the sliding gear pair 5, 6 before the meter cover (not shown) can be replaced after such a gear ratio change, i.e. meter tariff change from A to B or vice-versa. The shafts, gears and various other components of the mechanism may be moulded in or constructed from synthetic plastics material.
