Abstract

395,153. Liquid-level gauges. COSSOR, F., Accoson Works, Vale Road, Finsbury Park, London. June 27, 1932, No. 18123. [Class 106 (ii).] A U-tube gauge using mercury as indicating liquid is provided with a valve between the cistern and the indicating tube. The invention is described as applied to a sphygmomanometer. The U-tube and cistern are affixed to the back of a hinged cover which is folded down when the instrument is not in use as the mercury oxide which forms on top of the mercury is apt to soil the tube. The cistern a is formed with a recessed part b to receive the end of the tube c which abuts against a cork washer d at the perforated bottom of the recess, and communicates with the cistern through the narrow passage f. The bottom of the cistern has a screwed recess in which is secured by a plug j against a flange g a leather washer h. The latter carries a conical valve k adapted to close the aperture in the bottom of the receptacle. The stem passes through an aperture in the plug j and through an aperture in a bowed spring o the ends of which slide in slotted guides in the bottom of the receptacle. A nut r serves as an abutment for the spring. A leaf spring w is mounted on the end wall v of the casing and when the lid s is closed down the end of the stem n engages the spring w to close the valve k and tension the spring e which opens the valve when the lid is opened.
