Abstract

Condensation products, of the probable formula <FORM:0395119/IV/1> where R is hydrogen or an alkyl group, are manufactured by treating 2 : 6 - diamino - pyridine or a derivative thereof with an aliphatic aldehyde and formic acid in excess. The products are of pharmaceutical value on account of their bactericidal properties. In examples: (1) 2 : 6-diaminopyridine is refluxed with formaldehyde solution and formic acid; (2) diacetyl-2 : 6-diaminopyridine is refluxed with acetaldehyde solution and formic acid, all the acetyl groups being split off in the course of the reaction. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the reaction of monoacetyl-2 : 6-diaminopyridine with acetaldehyde solution and formic acid. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
