[Classes 38 (iii) and 38 (v).] A starter comprises pairs of contacts C1, C1<1>- C4, C4<1>, mounted on a fixed insulating base 1, bridging contacts C5, C8, mounted on a movable insulating carrier 2, and an electromagnet 6, which, when energized, causes the fixed and movable contacts to engage, the insulating base 1 being moulded with portions 29 which form shields for the contacts. Mounted on the upper side of the base 1 are brackets 31 which carry the core 5 of the electromagnet 6, and act as guides to the U-shaped armature 4 which has plates 33 overhanging the brackets. The armature 4 is connected with the combshaped carrier 2, by means of a pin-jointed link 3 passing through a hole in the base 1, and the coil of the electromagnet is carried by a strip 49 having pieces 50 pressed out at right-angles and engaging with the sides of the coil, the ends of the strip 49 being bent downwards to engage transverse slots in the core 5. The base 1 is screwed to and joins the bottom of a four-sided supporting structure 35, attached to the front wall of which is a separate structure 34, carrying " start " and " stop " push-buttons. These buttons pass through the front wall of the structure 35. Covers 42, 43, are provided and the whole arrangement may be supported on a vertical wall. Upon closure of the " start " press-button on the starter, or a remote " start '' button, the electromagnet 6 is energized, and maintains itself, thereby connecting a threephase motor to the supply. Overload thermal devices such as described in Specification 388,119 are included in the starter.
