Abstract

Anticorrosive varnishes, which may be mixed with pigments to give paints, contain a pale boiled oil obtained by adding to boiling linseed oil a solution of mastic in turpentine, white lead, zinc white, shellac varnish, borax and acetic acid and, after cooling, adding copal varnish and turpentine. The oil is mixed with raw linseed oil, copal varnish or other varnish free from colophony, a paste consisting of zinc white, white lead, linseed oil and copal varnish, a soapy liquid consisting of alum, soda, olive oil, turpentine, cocoanut oil, palm oil and lard, and a varnish consisting of shellac, methylated spirit, venice turpentine and amyl acetate, together with small proportions of vegetable oils such as cocoanut, palm, or olive oil. Oil of eucalyptus, or citronella, or clove oil may also be added.
