Abstract
126,270. Holzapfel, M. May 3, 1918, [Convention date]. Paints; varnishes.-Wood-tar is heated in the presence of lime, with additions of zinc oxide, red lead, litharge, manganese oxide, or similar driers. For example, 90 parts of wood tar, 5 parts of slaked lime, and 5 parts of zinc white are mixed together and heated to about 250‹ C. for about.half an hour, the product being then dissolved in turpentine, benzine, or other hydrocarbon to the consistency of a varnish or paint oil. The product may be ground up with pigments for the manufacture of paints. During the heating process, a. current of air or oxygen may be passed through the mixture. When light-coloured paints &c. are required, the woodtar is distilled before use to remove the pitch. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that a small proportion of whale oil, fish oil or other fats or fatty acids may be incorporated with the mixture at any stage of the manufacture. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
