Abstract

392,911. Building- blocks. MULLARD, H. G., 21, St. Helen's Estate, Radley Road, Abingdon, Berkshire. Nov. 9, 1931, Nos. 31008/31 and 31687/32. [Class 87 (i).] Blocks or bricks for use as toys or for building purposes have equal numbers of tongue or pin members on two opposite sides or ends adapted to fit into co-operating grooves or sockets, respectively, of the same dimensions in another brick whereby to lock them firmly together without use of adhesive or bonding material, the tongue or pin members on opposite sides of the bricks being in staggered relationship as in Figs. 1 and 5 respectively. The cross secton of the tongues a may be tapered as shown in Fig. 8. Further interlocking means may be provided by pins or staples of wood or concrete passing through tunnels c in coacting tongues, a tunnel not extending completely through a tongue, the outer side of which is to form the outer face of a wall. The tongues or grooves are of approximately the same dimensions, of width approximately one quarter of the width of the block b and of depth one third or more of the depth of the block. The blocks may be of wood if used as toys, or of concrete set in moulds if used for building purposes, and before being cut are of cubic or rectangular parallelopipedon form. A keypiece, Fig. 2, of U-shape is cut from a cube with a groove double the normal groove width. A corner piece is shown in Fig. 3 comprising two bricks cut at an angle of 45‹ to their axes. Fig. 4 shows a brick of H -section in which the cross-member extends on one or both sides. The bricks may be L-shaped, T-shaped, &c. One or more ridges may be provided perpendicularly on one or both side faces of the tongues of a brick to fit into similar recesses in the grooves of another brick and prevent longitudinal relative movement. The tongues may be broken along their length to leave a central rectangular cleared space provided with a hole or shaft registering with those in other bricks to provide a vertical shaft in which can be inserted a metal rod or bar, or which can be filled with concrete reinforced, if desired, by metal wires or ribs. A concrete encircling member may be provided at each floor level of a structure by forming bricks, with one side as in the upper half of Fig. 2, and with the other side as in the lower portion of Fig. 7, to be joined together by shoulders at the free edges of the tongues to form a closed tunnel which can be filled with concrete, reinforced is desired. The upper brick may be provided with a key to project into the tunnel. Such bricks may also be used over windows, doors, &c. to form a lintel therefor.
