Abstract
391,242. Supply systems for vacuum &c. discharge apparatus. FEILD, B. D., 24, Hickling Road; Ilford, Essex. Nov. 24, 1931, Nos. 32509/31 and 36/32. [Class 38 (iv).] The illumination of an electric discharge lamp L is controlled or varied by introducing in series therewith a condenser C and a choke coil K, thus enabling, if desired, several lamps to be connected in parallel with the employment of one transformer T only. The effect of the condenser or choke coil individually is to throw the voltage and amperage curves out of phase, and thus by adjusting them or by employing two or more condensers of different capacities and selectively switching in, the lamp may be brightened or dimmed. By employing both a condenser and choke the out-of-phase condition is rectified, and true power watts pass through the lamps, maintaining steady illumination. When lamps in parallel, or a single elongated lamp having several terminals along its length, are employed, the lamps or sections may be short-circuited across their terminals without affecting the luminosity of the remaining lamps. A magnetic switch may be employed for this purpose.' The lamps may form a uniform field acting as an illuminated background to an interchangeable stencilled or other character. Specifications 331,557 and 357,492 are referred to.
