Abstract
Condensation products of aldehydes and water-soluble ketones are manufactured by preparing a homogeneous mixture of the ketone with alkali and water by well stirring the ketone and water while gradually adding alkali, cooling the mixture while adding the aldehyde, immediately neutralizing the reaction mixture to prevent formation of resins, and finally isolating the condensation product. Preferably an excess of ketone is used and the addition of the aldehyde takes place below the surface of the well-stirred aqueous ketone-alkali mixture. An example describes the preparation of hydracetylacetone by adding acetaldehyde to a mixture of acetone, water and caustic soda below 20 DEG C., neutralizing, distilling off excess acetone and aldehyde and then distilling the hydracetylacetone under reduced pressure.
