[Class 39 (i).] To increase the breakdown voltage of hightension vacuum tubes, the voltage for " independent discharges " directly between the electrodes is raised by making the distance between the electrodes less than the free path of the gas, and means are provided to raise the voltage for " creeping spark " discharges along the wall of the tube, liable to cause " independent discharges " between the electrodes, to a valve approximately equal to the voltage for " independent discharges." The voltage for such spark discharges may be raised by highly heating the tube whilst continuously evacuating it or by subdividing the insulating inner wall by metal rings.
