Abstract
389,283. Seaming. CONTINENTAL CAN CO., Inc., 100, East 42nd Street, New York, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Kronquest, A. L. ; 1016, East Water Street, Syracuse, New York, U.S.A.) April 11, 1932, No. 10273. Convention date, April 28, 1931. [Class 83 (iv).] In a rotatable seaming head of a canclosing machine having the seaming-rolls carried by arms on relatively long actuating spindles which yield torsionally on passing the side seam, the arms are adjustably mounted on the spindles so as to be set in different positions. The work is supported by members 4, 10, the latter providing a seat for the end and a conical recess 11 for engaging the body. A member 9 locates the end in the can and also acts as an ejector at the close of the operation. The rolls 16 are carried on roller bearings on spindles 24 and are prevented from axial movement thereon by engagment with the member 4. The arms 15 supporting the rollers are rotatable on spindles 12, but carry worms 20 engaging worm wheels 13 non-rotatably mounted on the spindles. The rolls may be adjusted by rotation of the worms on release of a locking bolt. The pair of firstoperation rolls, and the pair of second-operation rolls are moved successively into engagement with the work by a reciprocating cam 32 having surfaces 34, 35 engaging projections 31 on followers 28 mounted on spindles 29 carried by arms 27 integral with the spindles 12. Recesses 34a, 35a permit the followers 28 and then the rolls to be moved to inoperative position.
