Abstract

8052. Pinson & Evans and Pinson, J. April 5. Metal, sheet, seaming and joining.-Relates to means for seaming and joining the neck and body parts of kettles, or the two body parts of hollow metal ware made in two parts. The edges a, b of the two parts A, B are previously moulded as shown in Fig. 5. The two parts are placed together in a lathe as shown in Fig. 2. The edge b is then beaded over the edge a by bringing up the roller c<1> as shown in Fig. 5, the inside of the kettle being supported by a roller g on a crank f adjustably fixed to a bar e passing through the chuck C and headstock spindle c. The bar e is prevented from turning by a squared portion i passing through a cross-bar E. It can be slid out to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, by means of a lever k and link o so as to allow the neck portion B of the kettle to be passed over the roller g and placed in the chuck. The roller g is stopped opposite the seam by the link o coming against a lug a<1>, the lever k being held by a stop s on the headstock. The body A of the kettle is held up against the neck portion B by a plate D on a spindle r which can revolve in the poppet spindle d. The roller c<1> is adjustably mounted on a slide G which can be moved along the saddle H by a lever d', a stop being provided to limit the movement. After the edge b has been beaded over the edge a by the roller c<1> it is tucked in by bevelled rollers i, j<1>, Fig. 7. The roller i<1> is mounted on a bracket s<1> adjustably fixed to the headstock, and always runs in contact with the edge b. The roller j<1> is slightly inclined to the roller i<1>, and is mounted on a slide J actuated by a lever k<1>. The support for the slide J is adjustably connected to the saddle H. After the edge b has been tucked in as shown in Fig. 7, the roller c' is again brought up and the joint completed.
