Abstract

388,882. Windscreen-cleaners. ELMS, R., 75, Larch Road, Cricklewood, London. Dec. 7, 1931, No. 33860. [Class 138 (i).] A windscreen-cleaner comprises an endless band, chain, or like member continuously driven and carrying a driving member which is automatically positioned relatively to the endless member for engagement and disengagement of the support for one or more wiping elements, thereby to effect their movement to and fro across the windscreen. In the construction shown, a base plate 1 secured to the windscreen moves two pulleys 3, 4 connected by an endless band 9 of bronze strip, one of the pulleys being adapted to be rotated by an electric motor or other means. The ends of the strip are connected by a link 10 provided with a pivoted member 11, which is caused to engage projections 33, 34 on a carriage 12 whereby the latter is reciprocated. Setting bars 15, 16 are provided on the base plate 1 for the purpose of keeping the end 11a of the member 11 in position to engage a projection on the carriage. Disengagement takes place when the member passes the end of the setting bar. Smaller setting bars 21, 25 are provided for stopping the carriage 12 at each end of its traverse and for positioning the member 11 suitably for movement around the pulleys 3, 4. The carriage 12 is provided with rollers 32 engaging a rail 29 and is connected to bars 37, 38 which carry windscreen-wipers 13, 14 respectively.
