Abstract
388,863. Expanding pulleys. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.-(Oxford Varnish Corporation ; Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A.) Nov. 6, 1931, No. 30846. [Class 80 (ii).] In a machine for graining furniture parts &c. a common drive for the pattern roll and the two co-operating transfer rolls is provided, which includes a progressively variable-speed driving connection for both transfer rolls, whereby the peripheral speed of either transfer roll may be synchronized with that of the pattern roll. A motor 4 drives through reduction gearing 4a a sprocket 25 which is connected by a chain 26 to a sprocket secured to the shaft 6 of the pattern roll 5. Another sprocket secured on the shaft 6 is connected by a chain 30 to a sprocket fast to a shaft which is geared to a lay-shaft 37. The layshaft 37 carries a double-cone driving- pulley having elements 38, 39 connected to a similar driven pulley having elements 42, 43 by a belt 45. Both the transfer rolls 10, 12 are driven by a sprocket-and-chain arrangement from the shaft 40. The peripheral speed of the particular transfer roller in use may be adjusted to correspond with that of the pattern roll by the adjustment of the double-cone pulleys. The pulley element 39 is mounted on a tubular extension of the pulley element 38, which extension is threaded to receive a nut or flange 61, adapted to retain the element 39 against the action of a number of interposed springs. The element 39 is slotted to slide over a key provided in the tubular extension. When it is desired to adjust the speed owing to wear &c., the flange 61 is turned to move the element 39 toward, or allow it to retreat from, the element 38, thus either forcing the belt 45 to ride at a greater distance from the axis of the shaft 57 to increase the speed of the driven shaft 40, or to allow it to ride nearer the axis and thus decrease the speed of the driven shaft 40. The flange 61 is tapped to receive a screw which is adapted to engage one of a number of recesses in the pulley element 39 on adjustment of the latter. The relative adjustment of the , pulley elements 42, 43 are the same as for the pulley elements 38, 39.
