Abstract

388,496. Road-vehicle undercarriages. THORNYCROFT & CO., Ltd., J. I., Smith Square, London, and BARFORD, V. G., Motor Vehicle & Engine Works, Basingstoke, Hampshire. Nov. 18, 1931, No. 31985. [Class 108 (ii).] Relates to rigid six-wheel motor vehicles of the kind having a pair of rear axles associated on each side with a pair of longitudinally arranged laminated springs 11, 11a which are pivoted at intermediate points 10, 10a to the vehicle frame, e.g. by brackets 12a, while the forward and rear ends of the springs are flexibly connected to the corresponding axle or axle casing by a rigid plate or frame 2 mounted on the axle or axle casing through the medium of longitudinally disposed trunnions 1, 1a. In order to prevent the side thrust that is transmitted between the axles and frame when the vehicle is cornering or travelling over uneven ground from straining and unduly wearing the trunnion pins associated with the springs 11, 11a, an axle controlling or centralizing device independent of the frames 2 is disposed transversely between the axles and positively connects the vehicle frame with the axles or axle casings. As shown, the centralizing device comprises a pair of V-shaped links 6, which may be in the form of spring blades, pivotally mounted at their centres on a longitudinal pin 8 revolubly supported by arms 13 on a fixed transverse member 9 carried by the brackets 12a. At their outer ends the links or blades 6 are provided with eyes 6a which embrace transversely disposed pins 5 carried by the forked inner ends 1 of the trunnions that support the frames 2. In this way the links 6 prevent lateral displacement of the axles relative to the vehicle frame, but, owing to freedom of movement afforded by the joint 8, 9, 13 permit free flexure of the springs 11, 11a, arising from varying load or unevenness of the ground surface. Specifications 259,322, [Class 108 (ii), Road vehicles, Undercarriage details &c. for], and 357,251 are referred to.
