Abstract

435,326. Vehicle spring-suspensions and undercarriages; steering arrangements. NORTH, O. D., 76, Elm Park Mansions, Park Walk, Chelsea, HUGH, P. G., and SCAMMELL LORRIES, Ltd., 52, High Holborn, both in London. April 30, 1934, Nos. 13028/34 and 11905/35. [Class 108 (ii)] [See also Group XXXI] Wheel-carrying frames are connected to the vehicle chassis and comprise two parts arranged quadrilateral fashion and adapted to rock or oscillate relatively to each other about a diagonal axis. The axles 1, 2 are each provided with lateral extensions 9, 10 having off-set lugs 11, each of which co-operate with bifurcated bearings 12 on the other axle so that the pivots are arranged on a diagonal axis as shown. Track rods 14, 16 connect the steering heads and a link 18 connects the levers 19, 20, the joint 18<a> preferably being on the hinge axis as shown. The assembly is mounted on the undercarriage by means of springs, brackets 23 on the extensions 9, 10 and corresponding brackets on the springs being connected by a ball and socket joint. Fig. 3 shows the frame members 1<a>, 2<a> disposed longitudinally of the vehicle and provided with off-set ends 1<b>, 2b to afford ample steering clearance for the steering wheels. If desired, the axles may be mounted on the undercarriage without springs and the wheels may be independently spring supported. Specification 403,132 is referred to.
