Abstract

498,121. Vehicle spring-suspensions; axles. AUTO UNION AKT.-GES. June 13, 1938, Nos. 17533 and 17534. Convention dates, June 12, 1937 and June 27, 1937. [Class 108 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXI] In a spring-suspension for a motor vehicle of the kind in which the wheels are independently supported by means of quadrilateral or other linkages upon a transverse member or axle 12 which is itself resiliently and oscillatably mounted on the chassis, the resilient mounting comprises a number of rubber elements 18 acting in shear between plates 19, 20 secured respectively to the axle 12 and to the side faces of the longitudinals 16, and with their planes of shear concentric and of arcuate or equivalent form. As shown in Fig. 1, the plates 19, 20 are of part-cylindrical form curved about a centre P2 on the longitudinal central plane of the vehicle, the plates 19 being secured to upstanding ends 11 of the axle, which is also provided with lugs 13 forming abutments for the main suspension springs 5. In the modification, Fig. 3, the ends of the axle 12 form housings 12a to accommodate lateral extensions 16a on the longitudinals 16, while the rubber elements 18 are disposed between obliquely arranged bent plates 19, 20 providing a lower centre of oscillation. In this construction the elements 18 are subject both to compressional and shear stresses due to loading or lateral shocks, while further rubber elements 21, 22 are positioned between the members 12a, 16a to absorb longitudinal shocks.
