[Classes 52 (i) and 52 (iii).] A desk or like article of furniture comprises a cupboard a, Fig. 1, or like storage compartment and a writing or drawing board g connected thereto solely by means of linkwork connections each comprising a plurality of links. The board g normally forms the front closing member of the cupboard and is secured at its lower end to metal plates h, Fig. 2, provided on the inner walls of the cupboard, by means of links i, k. In a modification, Fig. 7, the board is secured at its upper end and is maintained in its extended position by removable pegs a<1> that restrict the movements of the links i. The legs b of the desk are formed of channel-section metal and contain slidable members m terminating in castors n. The frames are depressible to take the weight of the desk on the castors by rotation of a handle r that acts on the members through cams and levers, or through screw or wedge mechanism. In a modification, Fig. 6, the invention is applied to a double desk having hinged and stayed lid members d. In this construction, the castors are rendered operable by the closing of the boards, the lower edges of which depress studs w projecting upwardly from the slidable members m. Additional boards may be stored in slides beneath the main boards.
