Abstract

388,070. Pistons. WAKEFIELD, J., 149, The Avenue, Tottenham, London. Aug. 19, 1931, No. 23342. [Class 122 (i).] A piston is constructed so that the head and skirt may be removed without disturbing the gudgeon-pin and connecting-rod connection. The piston has a combined head and skirt of aluminium alloy, cast iron, or cast steel, and has an inner member carrying the bearings for the gudgeon-pin and provided with two or more screwed bosses to receive fastening screws, inserted through the piston from above. The inner member comprises a flanged ring 14 with integral bosses 15 bored at 16 for the pin. Screwed bosses 18 on the ring 14 come beneath the bosses 22 on the head. Screwed pins with conical heads and extensions hold the head, the bosses, and pin together. In large engines, the upper half of the gudgeon-pin bosses may be removable. More than two screws may be used to secure the parts. The skirt may be divided, the upper portion secured to the head, and the lower portion secured to the ring 14. The lower part may function in lieu of the ring 14. The bosses may have liners, and arcuate split-pins secure the screws. Holes for the ends of a tool are provided to facilitate removal. The screwed members may be replaced by conical nuts and screws.
