388,033. Area meters. BUCZACZER, M., 26, St. Aidans Road, East Dulwich, London. Aug. 7, 1931, No. 22396. [Class 106 (i).] The area of an object such as a hide is determined by measuring photoelectrically the light blocked out by the object when it is placed on an illuminated surface, means being provided to compensate for irregularities in the illumination of the surface. The hide 3 is placed on a surface 1 illuminated by lamps 2, the light passing through an optical system 4 to a diffusing box 5 containing photoelectric cells 6. To compensate for the irregularities of illumination or imperfections in the optical system a photographic negative 7 is interposed in the light path. This negative is previously exposed to the light from the surface 1 in the absence of the hide, and then developed, the dark parts of the negative thus compensating for the light parts of the surface, and vice versa. In another method, the surface 1 is illuminated by a travelling strip of light and the total charge passed through the cells 6 is measured by a ballistic galvanometer. This second method may be used either in conjunction with the negative 7 or independently. The area determined may be stamped on the hide by known means.
