Abstract

Aniline and non-aqueous aldehydes are condensed in an inert organic solvent such as benzene or alcohol in the presence of acids such as phthalic acid. The aldehyde, which may be gaseous, or a solid polymer such as paraformaldehyde, may be added to the acidified solvent before or after the addition of the aniline and in the former case the aniline may be introduced after depolymerization and sometimes acetal formation has taken place. Known catalysts employed in the manufacture of aminealdehyde resins such as stannic tetrachloride and hexamethylenetetramine may be employed.
