Abstract

386,749. Wire-sealing machines ; wire straining. GATEHOUSE, E. A., 22, Essex Street, Strand, and KING, W., 50, Rodenhurst Road, both in London. Nov. 17, 1931, Nos. 31842/31 and 12574/32. [Class 45.] A wire or band strap sealing machine is characterized in the provision of a plurality of f independently operable crushing, corrugating, or sealing members each adapted to crush, corrugate, or seal a part of the wire or band or a seal thereon not affected by any of the other members, means being provided to operate these members one after the other. The machine is specially intended for use with seals described in Specification 389,268. As shown, the machine comprises a base a, Fig. 3, adapted to rest on the case to be bound, having an upright back-plate b, bosses b<2> of which form bearings for a shaft c having cams d<1>, e<1>, f<1>, g<1> which, when the shaft c is rotated by a ratchet- and-pawl device (not shown), depress a cutting member d and crushing or corrugating members e, f, g. These members are cut away to house compression springs k and slide in guides h, and their upper ends may be provided with friction-lessening rollers. Housed in bosses b<1> on the plate b is a U-shaped gripping member n held up to cams n<1> by springs n<2>. An anvil a2 on the base a is corrugated at a<2> to conform with corrugations in the seal. In operation the machine is placed in position on the case and a seal such as that referred to above comprising a double-channelled sleeve in one channel of which the end of a wire is secured by corrugation is placed on the case, the free end is passed round the case and inserted in the unoccupied channel, the seal is placed in the machine, the shaft c is turned, so as to depress the member n, which holds the corrugated half of the seal firmly, the free end of the wire is placed in a rocking, slotted tensioning wheel p, Fig. 1, and the shaft c is turned so as to depress successively the members g, d, f, e. The gripping member n, instead of being depressed by the cams n<1>, may have pins u which ride in cam slots t<1> in a horizontally moving plate t. The gripper may be dispensed with entirely, in which case two wire tensioning grips may be used. For the uniting of metal band straps, e.g. hoop iron straps, members w having projections w<1> may be used to produce corrugations x<2> on the flat seal x<1>, or the straps x may be united by punching holes x<3> by means of plungers y, the punched-out parts being turned down to form eyelets.
