Abstract

386,552. Supply systems for consuming devices. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN, 13D, Emmasingel, Eindhoven, Holland. June 25, 1932, No. 18013. Convention date, June 26, 1931. [Class 38 (iv).] Flashlight photographs are taken by causing a determined quantity of electric energystored in a container thereof to discharge abruptly through the filament of an incandescent lamp so as to overload the lamp and produce an intense illumination of short duration. The energy may be stored in a condenser or inductance, and the lamps used may have carbon or metal filaments. When condenser storage is used, an inductance (which may comprise one or both windings of a supply transformer) may be arranged in series with the lamps. Thermal inertia of the lamps may be reduced by preheating them. As shown in the Figure, the condenser 1 may be charged from an A.C. source through a transformer 9, 10 and rectifier 8 when a switch 5 is thrown over to 6, and be discharged through an inductance 2 and lamps 3, 4 when the switch 5 is thrown over to 7. In a modification, a switching arrangement is provided whereby (1) one of the windings of the transformer 9, 10 serves in place of the inductance 2, (2) the rectifier 8 is short circuited on discharge, (3) the transformer 9, 10 is switched off from the A.C. source on discharge, (4) the lamps 3, 4 are preheated either directly from the A.C. source or through an auxiliary transformer, as the condenser is charged. Reflectors may be used with the lamps. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to the use of a discharge tube as the lighting device. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
