386,297. Controlling variable-speed gearing. FIAT SOC. ANON., 250, Via Nizza, Turin, Italy. April 8, 1931, No. 10416. Convention date, April 8, 1930. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Class 80 (ii).] Mechanical selector mechanism for change-speed and reversing gearing of the sliding-gear type comprises two slidable plates B, D, Fig. 18, side by side, a third slidable plate C beneath them in the middle, a supporting plate S, and a transversely-slidable locking plate A. These plates may be made by stamping and punching. Ball selector lever 3 extends down into engagement with plate C, which slides in a depression 5, Figs. 3 and 5, in the bottom of fixed plate S. Plates B, D slide over plate C on ledges 7, 7<1> in plate S. Transverse slots 11, 11<1>, Fig. 3, are for the passage of locking lugs 19, 21, Figs. 6 and 7, of plate A. Lever 3 extends down through straight slot 17 in plate A, which is thus carried sidewise at each selecting movement of the lever. Plate B, Figs. 2 and 9, which carries a fork 27 to effect first and second speeds, has a single notch 29 for engaging lever 3, and a notch 31 for engaging lug 19. Plate D, Figs. 1 and 15, which carries a fork 53 for reverse, has a single notch 59 for engaging lever 3, and a notch 63 for engaging lug 21. It also has a longitudinal slot 61 to allow the free passage of lever 3 when the latter is engaging transverse slot 47, Fig. 12, in plate C. Plate C, which carries a fork 41, Fig. 2, to effect third and fourth speeds, has slots 47a, 47c to allow free passage of lever 3 when operating plates B, D, respectively, and shallow lateral slots 49, 51 for engaging the horizontal tips of lugs 21, 19, Figs. 20 and 24, when lever 3 is operating plates B, D. In Fig. 17 is shown an assemblage of all the plates in neutral with a spring plunger 35, Fig. 2, passing down through plates A, D into engagement with one of three lock slots 50 in plate C, looking it independently of plate A. Lever 3 engages slot 47, Fig. 12, and movement right and left of Fig. 17 operates plate C. To operate plate B, lever 3 is moved to engage slot 29 and then to left or right, as shown in Fig. 20, in which plate A is not shown. After each change, the parts must be returned to neutral, shown in Fig. 17. To operate plate D for its single reversing motion, lever 3 must be moved not only sidewise into engagement with notch 59, Fig. 15, but also downwards of Fig. 1 so that a reverse stop 4 carried by lever 3 passes clear below a stop 4<1> formed on the gear case. In order to operate the reverse, as shown in Fig. 24, lever 3 must thus pass down through and be guided by a. slot 15, Fig. 3, in the bottom of support plate S. Trans. verse slots 25, Fig. 6, in plate A are for the passage of locking plungers, not shown, for engaging rows of notches 33, 67, in plates B, D, respectively.
