319,262. Durant Motors, Inc., (Assignees of Neracher, C. A.). Sept. 19, 1928, [Convention date]. Controlling variable - speed gearing.-Gear-shifting mechanism for motor cars having more than two selector bars is provided with a shift lever normally maintained by springs in a central position, and a locking device to prevent movement of the bars not to be, operated. The shift lever 36 mounted in a ball-and-socket joint 8, 10 engages recesses 48, 50, 52 in shift-bar yokes 34, 38, 44 by gear-shifting movement and is normally maintained in the central position by springs 68, 81. A slide 54 carried on transverse members 56, 58 has a slot 60 which allows of gear-shifting movement of any bar but particles of transverse movement, and the springs 68 tend to move the slide to the left, Fig. 1, and the lever end into the recess 52. This is prevented by the spring 81, stronger than the spring 68, engaging a washer 72 and plunger head 70 coacting with an extension 82 on the lever, by adjusting the effective length of a spindle 74 sliding in a casing 76 so that its extreme movement is that shown in Fig. 1. The locking-device is carried by the slide 54, and comprises lugs 64 formed beneath the slide on each side of the slot 60, and of transverse width greater than that of the recesses 48, 50, 52. When, for example, the lever-end is shifted into the recess 52, the right-hand lug 64, Fig. 1, locks against gear-shifting movement the yokes 34, 38, whilst the opposite lug is now clear of the yoke 44, which can be freely moved for gear-shifting.
