Abstract
386,170. Printing late news. FOSTER & SONS, Ltd., J. and BRADSHAW, R., Soho Foundry, Preston. March 24, 1932, No. 8834. [Class 100 (ii).] In a late news printing-machine in which a number of late news printing-cylinders cooperate with an impression cylinder, each printing-cylinder is independently movable into and out of printing position and is driven by a two-part gear, one part being loose on its shaft and constantly driven from the impression cylinder and the other part being fast upon the shaft and adapted to be coupled to the fast gear by a sliding member, the actuation of which operates a gear for bringing the fast gear up to the speed of the loose gear so that the coupling can take place without shock. The box cylinders 7, 8, Fig. 2, are carried by shafts 9, 10 mounted in eccentric bearings 11, 12 rotatable by hand-levers to move the cylinders into and out of contact with the impression cylinder 6. The shaft of each box cylinder is provided with a loose gear 25, Fig. 3, driven continuously from a gear 24 on the cylinder 6, and an adjacent fast gear 87 adapted to be coupled to the gear 25 by a pin 45 carried by a slidable collar 44. The collar is actuated by manual means which also brings into operation an auxiliary gear for driving the gear 87 and causing the coupling of the gears 87, 25 to take place without shock. The auxiliary gear comprises a grooved friction wheel 29, Figs. 2 and 3, driven continuously from the cylinder 6, and a co-acting grooved wheel 32 which, with a ratchet wheel 33, is fixed to a shaft 34 mounted in eccentric bearings formed on a yoke 35 adapted to be operated by a cam 61 through a cam rod 64 to bring the gear 32 into and out of engagement with the wheel 29. A gear 36 loose upon the hub of the wheel 32 and meshing with the gear 87 is driven by the wheel 33 through pawls carried by the gear 36, so that the speed of the gear 87 is slightly less than that of the gear 25. The collar 44 is actuated by a lever 47 which is moved in one direction by a spring rod 48 under the control of a sliding member 49 having a notch 72 to engage a pawl 50 carried by the lever 47, and is moved in the other direction by the member 49 through the pawl 50. The member 49 is operated by the threaded end 74 of a shaft 54 operated by a hand-wheel 66 and this shaft also carries a gear 55 by which, through gear 56, worm 57, and worm wheel 60, the cam 61 is driven to cause engagement of the gear 32 with wheel 29. The shaft 54 is also threaded to engage a collar 67 connected by rod 68 to a collar 69 slidable upon the shaft 54 and co-operating with a rod 70 pivoted to the bearing 11 of the box cylinder shaft to prevent movement of the box cylinder into engagement with the impression cylinder until the shaft 54 has been operated sufficiently to couple the gears 25, 87 together.
