Abstract

184,987. Linotype & Machinery, Ltd., and Goulding B. J. J. July 28, 1921. Late news, means for printing; tripping-arrangements.- In a late-news printing-apparatus comprising two fudge heads adapted to coact alternately with an impression cylinder so that one fudge head is printing while the other is inoperative, the printing relationship between the fudge heads and impression cylinder is made and broken by moving both fudge heads simultaneously with respect to the impression cylinder, or by moving the impression cylinder relatively to the fudge heads. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the fudge heads 8, 9 are mounted on shafts 7 carried by a two-armed lever 6 fixed to a rockshaft 5 operated by the axial movement of a cam 3 on the shaft 1 of the impression cylinder 2, the cam having high and low tracts 3b, 3<a> alternately engaged by rollers 10<a>, 10<b> on a two-armed lever 10 fixed to the shaft 5. Pinions 12, 13 loose on the shafts 7 engage a driving gear 14 on the shaft 1 and have integral friction-clutch parts 15, 16, the coacting clutch parts 15a, 16a being formed on sleeves 15<b>, 16<b>, slidiably keyed on the shafts 7, and provided with friction discs 17, 18 co-operating with similar discs 17a, 18a on shafts 17<b>, 18b carrying pinions 17<c>, 18<c> engaging a gear 21 on the shaft of a motor 22. The clutch parts 15, 15a and 16, 16<a> can engage in only one position determined by spring-pressed bolts 15<c>, 16<e> in the parts 15<a>, 16a and holes 12<a>, 13a in the parts 15, 16. To change over the printing from one head to the other, for instance from the head 8 to the head 9, the motor 22 is started, and, through the discs 18a, 18, drives the shaft 7 of the head 9. When the speed of this shaft approximates to that of the pinion 13, the clutch lever 20 is operated to separate the discs 18a, 18 and to move the bolt 16<c> into engagement with the hole 13<a> and to close the clutch 16, 16a. The cam 3 is then operated to rock the shaft 5 to move the head 9 into and the head 8 out of printing relationship with the cylinder 1, and the clutch lever 19 operated to stop the head 8. In the form shown in Fig. 5, the impression cylinder 2 is movable relatively to the fudge heads 8, 9, and for this purpose is mounted in eccentric bearings 26 operated by lever arms 27, 28, 29 and links 30, 31. The arm 28 is provided with an operating-handle 34 and moves between stops 35, 36. In the extreme positions of the arm 28, the arms 28, 29 and links 30, 31 form toggles to lock the bearings of the cylinder 1.
