Abstract

385,873. Sharpening knives &c. STAINES, F., 94, Victoria Street, London. July 1, 1932, No. 18626. [Class 60.] V-slot and like blade shearpeners.-Apparatus for sharpening knives &c. consists of a pair of discs, having a number of curved surfaces, adapted to be rotated so that the surfaces of the discs alternately contact with the edge of the knife. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the apparatus comprises a casing a<1> housing gearing, which when operated by a handle c, drives a shaft d upon which are mounted two discs e recessed to contain rotatable or non- rotatable hardened steel intermeshing balls f, which may be seated in the discs upon rubber or other resilient pads g ; in operation, the discs are rotated and the knife edge is drawn along in contact with the balls. Spaces may be left between the balls in each disc, and the balls in one disc may be larger than the others, and the pitch diameter of one series of balls may be larger than that of the other series. The gearing may be omitted and a direct drive substituted, and the discs may be spaced axially, Fig. 6, a rest i for the back of the knife being formed on the spindle so that one face of the edge only is treated at one time. In place of the balls, sheet metal discs may be used having rounded surfaces formed thereon by embossing or cutting ; or the surfaces may be separate and secured bv screws &c. Two sets of balls &c. may be employed for sharpening long knives ; the balls may be capable of radial motion so as to move outwardly to contact with the knife.
